Fragrance is sensitive to heat, light and air, and Pakistan's summers can be tough on it. Store your perfumes and attars correctly and they will smell their best for much longer.
The Three Enemies of Fragrance
- Heat speeds up the breakdown of fragrance oils.
- Light, especially direct sunlight, changes and weakens scent over time.
- Air slowly oxidises fragrance once a bottle is opened.
Where to Store Perfume
- In a cool, dark place, such as a drawer or cupboard away from windows.
- In the original box, which protects it from light.
- Not in the bathroom: heat and humidity from showers change fragrance.
- Never in a car: in Pakistan's summer, a parked car can get extremely hot.
- Not on a sunny windowsill or dressing table in direct light.
Storing Attar
Attars are oils, so they keep well, but the same rules apply: keep the cap tightly closed, store upright, and keep them away from heat. Wipe the neck of the bottle before closing to keep the cap clean.
Everyday Habits
- Always replace the cap after use.
- Avoid shaking bottles.
- For travel and handbags, carry a small 15 ml perfume or 3 ml attar and keep your main bottle safely at home.
Signs a Fragrance Has Been Damaged
A noticeably darker colour, a sour or flat smell, or a top note that has disappeared can be signs that a fragrance has been exposed to heat or light.
