Attar, ittar, itr, atar: you'll see all of these spellings in Pakistan. Are they different products? No. They are all the same thing.
Where the Word Comes From
The word comes from the Arabic and Persian word itr, meaning fragrance or perfume. As it travelled across the region, it took on different spellings in Urdu, Hindi and English: attar, ittar, itr and atar.
What They All Mean
A concentrated fragrance oil applied directly to the skin. Traditionally, attars were made by distilling flowers, herbs and woods into a base oil such as sandalwood. Today, the word generally covers oil-based fragrances without alcohol.
Is "Ittar" Stronger or More Traditional?
No. The spelling doesn't tell you anything about quality, strength or tradition. Look at the notes, the ingredients and whether it is alcohol-free.
What About "Perfume Oil"?
"Perfume oil" and "concentrated perfume oil" are modern names for the same idea: fragrance in oil rather than alcohol.
