"If I wear attar, do I still need deodorant?" Yes, because they do two different jobs. Here's the simple explanation.
What Deodorant Does
Deodorant (and antiperspirant) is made to control body odour and, in the case of antiperspirant, reduce sweat, mainly under the arms.
What Attar Does
Attar is a fragrance. It adds a pleasant scent but isn't designed to control sweat or odour. Covering odour with attar usually just mixes the two smells.
How to Use Both
- Shower, then apply deodorant to your underarms.
- Apply attar to your pulse points: wrists, neck and behind the ears.
- Don't apply attar to underarms; that skin is sensitive and it's not where fragrance works best.
Tips for Pakistan's Heat
- Choose an unscented or lightly scented deodorant so it doesn't clash with your attar.
- Use light, fresh attars in summer. See summer attars.
- Carry a 3 ml attar for a midday refresh.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can attar replace deodorant?
No. Use deodorant for odour control and attar for fragrance.
Is attar or perfume better with deodorant?
Both work. Attar is alcohol-free and stays closer to the skin; perfume projects more. See Attar vs Perfume.
