How to Apply Attar Properly: Where, When and How Much

Attar is concentrated, so how and where you apply it makes a big difference. Apply it well and a few drops last all day; apply it badly and it fades fast or overwhelms people around you. Here is the simple way to do it.

Where to Apply Attar

Apply attar to your pulse points, the warm spots where blood vessels are close to the skin. The warmth helps the scent develop:

  • Inner wrists
  • Sides of the neck
  • Behind the ears
  • Inner elbows
  • Collarbones

How Much to Use

Less than you think. One light touch on each wrist and one on the neck is enough for most attars. Rich scents such as SHAMAMA or DARK MOMENT need even less. You can always add more; you cannot take it away.

When to Apply

  • After a shower or wudu, on clean skin, is ideal. Slightly warm, clean skin holds fragrance best.
  • Before getting dressed, so the oil settles before it touches fabric.
  • Before prayer, many people apply a little after wudu. See our guide to attars for namaz and Jummah.

Step by Step

  1. Open the bottle and touch the applicator to your wrist.
  2. Dab gently. Do not rub your wrists together; friction breaks down the top notes faster.
  3. Touch your wrist lightly to the side of your neck and behind your ears.
  4. Let it settle for a minute before dressing.

Tips to Make It Last Longer

  • Moisturise first with an unscented lotion; dry skin absorbs fragrance quickly.
  • Choose heavier notes such as oud, amber and musk for maximum longevity.
  • Carry a 3 ml bottle for a top-up after Zuhr or before an evening event.

What Not to Do

  • Don't apply directly onto light-coloured or delicate fabric. Read Can Attar Stain Clothes?
  • Don't apply near the eyes, lips or on broken skin.
  • Don't over-apply because you can no longer smell it; that is usually nose blindness.
