Attar vs Perfume: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Choose?

Attar or perfume? It is one of the most common questions fragrance lovers in Pakistan ask. Both can smell wonderful, but they are made differently, wear differently and suit different occasions. This guide explains the difference simply, so you can choose the right one for you.

What Is an Attar?

An attar (also called itr or ittar) is a concentrated fragrance oil. It has been part of South Asian and Middle Eastern culture for centuries and is a familiar part of daily life in Pakistan, from Jummah to weddings. An attar is applied directly to the skin, usually with a roller or the tip of the bottle.

At FAHA Fragrance, all our attars are oil-based and completely alcohol-free.

What Is a Perfume?

A perfume is a spray fragrance. The fragrance oils are blended into a perfumer's alcohol base, which helps the scent spread into the air when sprayed. FAHA perfumes come in 15 ml, 30 ml, 50 ml and 100 ml, with selected scents also available as a higher-concentration Parfum.

Attar vs Perfume: The Key Differences

Which Lasts Longer?

Longevity depends on the scent, your skin, the weather and how much you apply. Because attars are concentrated oils that sit on the skin, many people find they last a long time, even if they stay close to the body. Perfumes project more strongly at first. Warm scents such as oud, amber, leather and vanilla tend to last longest in either form.

Which Is Better for Pakistan's Weather?

In hot, humid summers, a light touch matters. Many people prefer an attar or a fresh citrus or aquatic perfume applied sparingly. In winter and during wedding season, richer perfumes come into their own, projecting beautifully on cool evenings.

When to Choose an Attar

  • You prefer a completely alcohol-free fragrance.
  • You want a scent for namaz, Jummah or Ramadan.
  • You work in an office and want something subtle that does not fill the room.
  • You want a small, travel-friendly bottle that is easy to carry.

When to Choose a Perfume

  • You want your fragrance to be noticed at weddings, dinners and events.
  • You like to spray your clothes as well as your skin.
  • You want a quick, easy application on the go.

Why Not Both?

Most FAHA scents are available as both an attar and a perfume. For example, AFTER DARK Attar and AFTER DARK Perfume share the same warm tobacco and oud profile. SILVER OUD Attar and SILVER OUD Perfume are another popular pair. Many customers wear the attar during the day and the perfume in the evening, or apply the attar to the skin and spray the perfume on their clothes for extra depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is attar halal?
FAHA attars are oil-based and completely alcohol-free, which is why many people choose them for prayer and religious occasions.

Does attar stain clothes?
Attar is an oil, so it is best applied to the skin rather than directly onto delicate or light-coloured fabrics.

How much attar should I apply?
A small amount goes a long way. Start with a light touch on your wrists and neck and add more only if you want a stronger presence.

Do FAHA perfumes contain alcohol?
Yes. Our spray perfumes use a perfumer's alcohol base. If you prefer to avoid alcohol, choose the attar version of your favourite scent.
