Oud is one of the most treasured ingredients in the world of fragrance, and in Pakistan it has a long tradition at weddings, Jummah, Eid and special gatherings. If you have ever wondered what oud actually is, how it smells and how to wear it, this beginner's guide from FAHA Fragrance explains everything.
What Is Oud?
Oud, also called agarwood or aloeswood, comes from the heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, found mainly in South and Southeast Asia. When the tree is affected by a natural mould, it produces a dark, fragrant resin to protect itself. This resin-soaked wood is what gives oud its rich, distinctive aroma. Because it forms slowly and rarely, natural oud has long been one of the most precious fragrance materials in the world.
What Does Oud Smell Like?
Oud has a deep, complex scent that can be woody, smoky, earthy, slightly sweet, leathery and even a little animalic. On its own, it is bold and powerful. In modern perfumery, oud is often blended with other notes to make it smoother and easier to wear:
- Rose and oud: a romantic, classic Middle Eastern pairing.
- Amber and oud: warm, rich and luxurious.
- Vanilla and oud: soft, sweet and modern.
- Spice and oud: saffron, pepper and cardamom add warmth and energy.
How to Wear Oud
- Start small. Oud is strong. One or two sprays, or a small dab of attar, is usually enough.
- Save it for cooler weather. Oud shines in winter and on evenings. In summer, wear it lightly.
- Choose an attar for prayer. Oud attars are oil-based and alcohol-free, a traditional choice for Jummah and Eid.
- Try a softer oud first. If you are new to oud, begin with a blend such as rose oud or soft white oud.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is oud for men or women?
Oud is traditionally unisex. Rose and vanilla oud blends are especially popular with women, while smoky and spicy ouds are often favoured by men.
Why is oud so expensive?
Natural oud forms slowly and only in a small number of trees, which makes it rare. FAHA's oud fragrances capture the character of oud at an affordable price.
Is oud good for summer?
Oud is strongest in cool weather. In summer, apply it lightly, preferably in the evening, or choose a soft oud such as WHITE OUD.
Can I try oud before buying a full bottle?
